Angelus Hut

Perched high in the Nelson Lakes National Park, Angelus Hut is a backcountry gem that rewards trampers with jaw-dropping alpine scenery. Accessible only on foot, this remote hut sits beside a tarn at 1,650m, with views that stretch across the Travers and Sabine valleys. It’s the kind of place where the silence is broken only by kea calls and the wind — a true escape into New Zealand’s wild heart.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most trampers spend one night at Angelus Hut, which allows for a full day of exploration on the ridges. If you’re doing the classic Travers-Sabine Circuit, plan for 3–4 days total, with a night here as the highlight. In summer, you can also day-hike from the road end, but it’s a strenuous 6–8 hour push — better to stay overnight and soak it in.
