Tucked away at the northern edge of Hawke’s Bay, Wairoa is a sleepy riverside town where Māori heritage, Art Deco architecture, and the wild beauty of the East Coast converge. With the Wairoa River lapping at its doorstep and the Pacific Ocean just a short drive away, this is a place to slow down, cast a line, and soak up a genuinely unhurried slice of New Zealand life.
Highlights & What to See
- Wairoa Māori & Cultural Centre – A superb museum housing one of the country’s finest collections of Māori artifacts, including a rare carved meeting house and the legendary Te Tokanga-nui-a-noho, a massive pounamu (greenstone) mere.
- Art Deco Walk – Wairoa boasts a compact but striking cluster of 1930s Art Deco buildings, a legacy of the rebuild after the 1931 Napier earthquake. Grab a self-guided map from the i-SITE.
- Mahia Peninsula – A 30-minute drive east leads to this scenic finger of land with excellent surf beaches, dolphin-spotting cruises, and the iconic Māhia Beach.
- Wairoa River Fishing – The town is a base for brown trout fishing in the Wairoa River and its tributaries; local operators offer guided trips.
- Te Urewera Rainforest – The vast, pristine expanse of Te Urewera (formerly a national park) lies to the west, offering hiking, kayaking on Lake Waikaremoana, and deep immersion in native forest.
- Wairoa Lighthouse – A short walk from the town centre leads to a historic lighthouse with views over the river mouth and out to sea.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors pass through Wairoa in a day, but the town rewards a longer stay. Set aside at least half a day to explore the cultural centre and Art Deco streets, then add a full day for a trip to Mahia Peninsula or a half-day for a guided fishing excursion. If you’re hiking in Te Urewera, budget two to three days to do the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk justice.
