Just south of Wellington, the Red Rocks (Pariwhero) offer a dramatic coastal walk where ancient volcanic seabed meets the wild Tasman Sea. This rugged reserve is named for its iron-rich red-hued rocks, formed 200 million years ago. The track hugs the shoreline, passing seal colonies and offering sweeping views of the Cook Strait. It’s a favourite for hikers, photographers, and anyone craving a dose of raw, elemental nature within easy reach of the city.
Highlights & What to See
- Red Rocks Coastal Walk: A 6 km return walk (about 2 hours) along a 4WD track from Owhiro Bay. The path is easy but can be muddy after rain. The red rocks themselves are most vivid near the southern end.
- New Zealand Fur Seal Colony: A resident colony of seals often lounges on the rocks at the far end. Visit from May to October for the best viewing, and keep a respectful distance.
- Te Kopahou Reserve: The walk continues into this larger reserve, offering side trips to the historic Karori Rock lighthouse and the rugged Sinclair Head.
- Fossil Hunting: Keep an eye out for ancient marine fossils embedded in the rocks, a testament to the area’s deep geological past.
- Sunset Photography: The red rocks glow brilliantly in the late afternoon light, making for stunning photos against the crashing waves.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal: allow 2–3 hours for the walk and seal viewing, plus time to linger at the end. If you’re short on time, a quick 1-hour visit can still give you a taste, but you’ll miss the seals. Combine with a morning or afternoon in Wellington’s city centre for a balanced day.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wellington City: Just 15 minutes’ drive away, with Te Papa museum, Cuba Street’s cafes, and the cable car to the Botanic Garden.
- Island Bay: A charming seaside suburb with a marine reserve, ideal for snorkelling and a fish-and-chip lunch.
- Houghton Bay: A quieter beach adjacent to the walk start, perfect for a post-hike dip (though it can be chilly).
- Red Rocks to Owhiro Bay: Explore the broader Owhiro Bay area, with its own coastal walks and seal viewing spots.
- Cook Strait Ferry: The walk offers great views of the ferry route, and you could time your visit with a ferry crossing for a different perspective.
