Rising steeply above Wellington's central city, Mt Victoria offers the best panoramic views of the harbour, the city skyline, and the surrounding hills. This iconic lookout is a favourite among locals and visitors alike, especially at sunset when the city lights begin to twinkle. The summit is easily reached by a short but brisk walk from Courtenay Place, or by car via lookout road. Once at the top, you'll find a grassy reserve perfect for a picnic, and a network of walking and mountain-biking trails that crisscross the forested slopes.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Lookout – The main viewpoint offers a stunning 360-degree panorama of Wellington Harbour, the South Island's Kaikōura Ranges, and the city below. It's a classic photo spot, especially at golden hour.
- Mt Victoria Walking Tracks – Several well-marked trails wind through native bush and along the ridge, including the popular Southern Walkway that continues to Island Bay. The tracks are suitable for all fitness levels.
- Mount Victoria Tunnel – A historic 2.5 km tunnel built in the 1930s, now part of the road network but a cool engineering feat to drive or cycle through.
- Film Location – The summit and surrounding streets were used as filming locations for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies (the 'Hobbiton Woods' scenes). You can spot the exact spots on a guided tour or self-guided walk.
- Oriental Bay – The nearby beach and promenade are perfect for a swim or a coffee after your hike, just a short walk down the hill.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours for a visit to Mt Victoria. If you're walking from Courtenay Place, the climb takes about 20–30 minutes each way. Add extra time if you plan to explore the network of trails or enjoy a picnic at the summit. For a more leisurely experience, combine your visit with a walk along Oriental Bay or a stop at one of the cafés in the surrounding streets.
