Waitaki Valley

Stretching inland from the coast between Oamaru and the Southern Alps, the Waitaki Valley is a sun-soaked corridor of dramatic limestone landscapes, rich Māori rock art, and a burgeoning food-and-wine scene. This is New Zealand at its most understated — where hydro dams create turquoise lakes and the nights are so dark the stars seem close enough to touch.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Give the Waitaki Valley at least two full days — one to explore the coast and Victorian architecture in Ōamaru, and another to drive the inland scenic route past the dams, rock art and limestone formations. If you’re hiking or cycling the Alps to Ocean Trail, budget three to five days to pedal the whole 300 km from Aoraki/Mount Cook to Ōamaru.
