Wairarapa is a sun-drenched region on the southern tip of New Zealand's North Island, just a scenic drive over the Rimutaka Hill from Wellington. Known for its boutique vineyards, artisan food producers, and dramatic coastline, this is a place where you can cycle between cellar doors, wander vintage shops in Greytown, and watch the sun set over the wild beaches of Cape Palliser. It’s an easy detour off the main tourist trail, but deserves a few days of your time.
Highlights & What to See
- Martinborough – A compact wine village with over 20 cellar doors, many within walking or cycling distance. Pinot noir is the star, but the whole region produces excellent cool-climate wines.
- Cape Palliser – A dramatic coastal drive leads to a fur seal colony and the iconic Cape Palliser Lighthouse. Climb the 250 steps for sweeping ocean views.
- Greytown – The main street is lined with Victorian wooden buildings housing galleries, bookshops, and excellent cafes. Don’t miss the Saturday morning farmers’ market.
- Castlepoint – A striking limestone headland with a lighthouse and a natural rock arch. The beach is great for a bracing walk and spotting seabirds.
- Putangirua Pinnacles – Eerie rock formations that were a filming location for The Lord of the Rings. A short walk takes you into a landscape that feels otherworldly.
- Lake Wairarapa – A large wetland sanctuary for birdlife. Kayak or walk the trails to spot herons, swans, and the rare black stilt.
Suggested Time to Spend
Three days is ideal to explore the region at a relaxed pace. Spend the first day in Martinborough, tasting wines and cycling between vineyards. On day two, drive the coastal route to Cape Palliser and Putangirua Pinnacles, with a stop in Greytown for lunch. Use the third day for Castlepoint or a more leisurely exploration of the inland towns. If you’re short on time, Martinborough and Greytown can be seen on a day trip from Wellington, but you’ll miss the coastal drama.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wellington – The capital city is just over an hour’s drive away, offering museums, craft beer, and the waterfront. Combine for a city-and-wine weekend.
- Palliser Bay – The wild coastline south of Lake Wairarapa is perfect for a scenic drive and short walks to secluded beaches.
- Masterton – The region’s largest town has a good museum and is the gateway to the Tararua Forest Park for hiking.
- Rimutaka Forest Park – On the drive from Wellington, stop for a walk among ancient rimu and tōtara trees, with several short trails suitable for all fitness levels.
