Christchurch’s Transitional Cathedral — often called the Cardboard Cathedral — is a striking symbol of resilience and innovation. Designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, this temporary replacement for the earthquake-damaged Anglican cathedral is built largely from cardboard tubes, timber, and steel. Its triangular form and stunning stained-glass window (a triangular rose window) create a serene, light-filled space that draws visitors for both worship and architectural pilgrimage.
Highlights & What to See
- Cardboard Tube Architecture — Marvel at the 98 cardboard tubes that form the cathedral’s main structure, each coated with waterproof polyurethane and fire retardant.
- Triangular Rose Window — A contemporary stained-glass masterpiece created from 49 panels, depicting scenes of Christchurch’s past and future.
- Interior Peace — Step inside to experience the calm, airy interior with its exposed timber ribs and soft natural light — a stark contrast to the city’s bustle.
- Community Spirit — The cathedral serves as a living community hub, hosting concerts, art exhibitions, and daily services.
- Nearby: Christchurch Botanic Gardens & Canterbury Museum — Both are a short walk away, perfect for a combined visit.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30–45 minutes to appreciate the architecture and soak in the atmosphere. If you’re attending a service or event, plan for an hour or more. The cathedral is compact, so it’s easy to combine with a stroll through the central city or a visit to the nearby Arts Centre.
