Rangitata River Trail
The Rangitata River Trail is a hidden gem for cyclists and walkers in Canterbury, tracing the braided Rangitata River from the foothills of the Southern Alps to the coast. This 30-km gravel path offers a unique perspective on New Zealand's iconic high-country landscape, with ever-changing views of snow-capped peaks, turquoise river channels, and vast sheep stations. It's a peaceful, off-the-beaten-track adventure that rewards with a real sense of wilderness.
Highlights & What to See
- Rangitata River Gorge – The trail's southern end passes through a dramatic gorge where the river narrows, with towering cliffs and clear, fast-flowing water.
- Braided River Channels – The river's braided sections are a photographer's dream, especially in late afternoon light when the water glows against the grey shingle.
- High Country Stations – You'll ride past working sheep and cattle stations, with historic homesteads and wool sheds that tell the story of Canterbury's pastoral heritage.
- Birdlife – Keep an eye out for black stilt (kakī), wrybill, and other wading birds that thrive in the riverbed habitats.
- Mount Peel – The trail offers superb views of this iconic peak, especially from the northern section near the Rangitata Diversion Race.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day (4–6 hours cycling) to complete the entire trail one-way, or break it into a leisurely half-day ride from either end. Most people start at the Peel Forest end and cycle south to the Rangitata Gorge car park, then arrange a shuttle back. If you're short on time, the most scenic stretch is the 10 km between Peel Forest and the Rangitata Diversion Race. The trail is mostly flat and suitable for intermediate cyclists; mountain bikes or gravel bikes are recommended.
