Karamea

Karamea is a remote coastal settlement at the end of State Highway 67, the gateway to the wild Oparara Basin and the Heaphy Track. This is the West Coast at its most untamed — dense rainforest, limestone arches, and a laid-back community that feels a world away from Christchurch.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Karamea is a destination in itself, not a quick stop. Plan at least two full days: one to explore the Oparara Basin and caves, and another for a Heaphy Track day walk or a relaxed coastal ramble. If you're hiking the full Heaphy Track, you'll likely overnight in Karamea before or after.
