Karamea is a remote coastal settlement at the end of State Highway 67, the gateway to the wild Oparara Basin and the Heaphy Track. This is the West Coast at its most untamed — dense rainforest, limestone arches, and a laid-back community that feels a world away from Christchurch.
Highlights & What to See
- Oparara Basin Arches — Marvel at the massive Oparara Arch and the delicate Moria Gate Arch, both formed in ancient limestone. The short walks through mossy rainforest are magical on a drizzly day.
- Honeycomb Hill Caves — Join a guided tour to see the eerie glowworm grottoes and the world's largest known colony of the rare giant cave wētā.
- Heaphy Track — The western end of this Great Walk begins near Karamea. Even if you're not hiking the whole route, a day walk to the Heaphy River mouth offers stunning coastal scenery.
- Karamea Estuary Walkway — An easy loop through wetlands and along the estuary, great for birdwatching (look for white herons and royal spoonbills).
- Big Rimu Walk — A short boardwalk loop through podocarp forest to see a towering rimu tree estimated at 800 years old.
Suggested Time to Spend
Karamea is a destination in itself, not a quick stop. Plan at least two full days: one to explore the Oparara Basin and caves, and another for a Heaphy Track day walk or a relaxed coastal ramble. If you're hiking the full Heaphy Track, you'll likely overnight in Karamea before or after.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Punakaiki — About 90 minutes south, home to the famous Pancake Rocks and blowholes, plus excellent kayaking on the Pororari River.
- Westport — The nearest town with good services, just over an hour away, offering the historic Coaltown Museum and Cape Foulwind seal colony.
- Murchison — A great stop for whitewater rafting or jetboating on the Buller River, roughly two hours east on the way back to Christchurch.
- Nelson Lakes National Park — A scenic drive northeast leads to alpine lakes and beech forests, perfect for tramping and lake swimming.
