Franz Josef Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, plunging from the Southern Alps down to rainforest just 300 metres above sea level. This dynamic river of ice is constantly shifting, and you can get remarkably close to its terminal face on foot or by helicopter. The Māori name, Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere, tells a story of love and grief, adding a layer of cultural depth to the raw natural beauty.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least a full day to experience Franz Josef Glacier properly. The valley walk takes a couple of hours, but a heli-hike or glacier tour will fill most of the day. If you're short on time, a guided ice hike (without helicopter) is a good half-day option. Many travellers spend one night in Franz Josef village to break up the drive along the West Coast.
