Collingwood, a tiny settlement at the northern tip of the South Island, feels like the edge of the world. Nestled on the shores of Golden Bay, this laid-back village is the gateway to Farewell Spit and Kahurangi National Park, offering wild beaches, untamed forests, and a palpable sense of isolation. It’s the kind of place where you slow down, breathe deeply, and let the landscape do the talking.
Highlights & What to See
- Farewell Spit Nature Reserve – A 35km sandspit that arcs into the Tasman Sea, a sanctuary for seabirds and fur seals. Take a guided tour to walk on the ocean floor at low tide and see the lighthouse.
- Kahurangi National Park – New Zealand’s second-largest national park, with the Heaphy Track and countless other hiking trails through ancient forests and alpine tarns.
- Wharariki Beach – A wild, windswept beach with massive sea arches, seal colonies, and spectacular sunsets. Accessible via a short walk from the carpark.
- Collingwood Museum – A quirky local museum housed in a former post office, telling the story of gold mining, Māori history, and early European settlement.
- Gibbs Hill Lookout – A short drive or walk up for panoramic views over Golden Bay and the distant mountains.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most people spend one full day exploring Farewell Spit and the nearby beaches, but if you’re keen on hiking in Kahurangi, allow at least two nights. The Heaphy Track requires 4–5 days, but day walks like the Cobb Valley or the Anatoki River are doable in half a day. Collingwood itself is tiny—you can see the main street in 20 minutes—but the surrounding nature demands at least a full day.
