Barrys Bay is a sleepy, scenic gem on Banks Peninsula, just a short drive from Christchurch. This tiny settlement hugs the shores of Akaroa Harbour, offering a peaceful escape with stunning coastal views, walking trails, and a strong local food scene centred on its famous cheese factory. It’s the kind of place where you slow down, breathe in the salt air, and feel a world away from the city.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Barrys Bay is best enjoyed as a half-day stop on a day trip from Christchurch to Akaroa. Spend an hour or two tasting cheese, taking a short walk, and soaking up the views. If you're after a more relaxed pace, combine it with lunch at the cheese factory café or a picnic on the beach. Most visitors find 2–3 hours here plenty, but you could easily linger longer if you’re kayaking or exploring the surrounding bays.
