Twizel is a pragmatic yet charming town in the Mackenzie Basin, serving as the perfect base for exploring the turquoise lakes and alpine scenery of the central South Island. Originally built for a hydroelectric project, it now welcomes travelers with a relaxed vibe, excellent local eateries, and easy access to Aoraki/Mount Cook and the stunning lakes of the region.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Pukaki – Drive to the shore for jaw-dropping views of Aoraki/Mount Cook reflected in the milky-blue water. The lake's colour is surreal, especially in late afternoon light.
- Lake Ōhau – A quieter alternative to Pukaki, with lovely walking trails and a picturesque lodge. Perfect for a peaceful picnic or a short hike.
- Twizel River Track – An easy riverside walk that showcases the braided river landscape and offers glimpses of the Southern Alps. Great for a morning stroll.
- High Country Salmon – A must-stop for fresh salmon, either to take away or enjoy at the on-site café. Try the salmon sashimi or a smoked salmon bagel.
- Poppies Cafe – The heart of Twizel's food scene, known for excellent coffee, hearty breakfasts, and delicious pies. A local favourite.
- Dark Sky Project – While the main observatory is in Takapō, Twizel lies within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. On a clear night, step outside for incredible stargazing.
Suggested Time to Spend
Twizel itself is small, so a half-day is enough to explore the town and its immediate walks. However, to fully appreciate the surrounding lakes and mountains, plan for at least one full day – ideal as a stopover between Christchurch and Queenstown. Two nights allow you to day-trip to Aoraki/Mount Cook village and enjoy a relaxed pace.
