Mount Cook (Aoraki) is New Zealand’s highest peak and the heart of the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This dramatic alpine landscape of glaciers, moraines, and turquoise lakes offers some of the most spectacular hiking and stargazing in the country. The small village of Mount Cook serves as your base for exploring this pristine wilderness.
Highlights & What to See
- Hooker Valley Track – An easy, well-maintained walk with swing bridges and stunning views of Mount Cook and the Hooker Glacier. Allow 3 hours return.
- Tasman Glacier View – Walk to the Tasman Glacier terminal lake (20 minutes) to see icebergs up close, or take a boat tour among the ice.
- Kea Point Track – A short, rewarding walk to a lookout over the Mueller Glacier moraine and Mount Cook (2 hours return).
- Stargazing at the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve – Join a guided night tour or simply step outside after dark for unforgettable southern skies.
- Glacier Explorers – A boat cruise on the Tasman Glacier terminal lake, navigating among icebergs and learning about glacial geology.
- The Hermitage Hotel – Even if you’re not staying, pop in for a coffee or the panoramic views from the restaurant.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day hiking and sightseeing, but two nights allows you to tackle longer walks and enjoy the dark-sky experience without rush. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Lake Tekapo or Twizel is feasible—just aim to arrive by mid-morning to fit in the Hooker Valley Track and a glacier viewpoint.
