Waitangi Day
6 February each year
New Zealand's national day, observed on 6 February. It commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi) on 6 February 1840 at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands. The treaty, signed between representatives of the British Crown and over 500 Māori rangatira (chiefs), is considered New Zealand's founding document. Celebrations are held across the country, with the main ceremony at the Treaty Grounds in Waitangi.
