Labour Day
Fourth Monday in October
Celebrated on the fourth Monday in October, Labour Day commemorates the workers' rights movement. New Zealand was a world pioneer in labour rights — carpenters in Wellington won the 8-hour workday as early as 1840, and on 28 October 1890 workers marched in Auckland and Wellington to celebrate the introduction of the 8-hour working day nationally.
